Why UdharPay Chose a 7-Day Free Trial Over a Freemium Model
UdharPay · Business Model · SaaS · Monetisation · Pre-launch
The Challenge
The original UdharPay model included a permanent free plan — 25 customers, 10 reminders/month. The core problem: free users who never experience scheduled automated reminders never experience the core value proposition.
- Free plan users show lower engagement and higher support burden
- At ₹0.16 per WhatsApp message, even limited free usage has real cost
- Free users compare every limitation to their free baseline — not to the paid product's value
Our Solution
The permanent free plan was replaced with a 7-day free trial on all paid plans — no credit card required.
Why trial beats freemium for UdharPay specifically
Automated scheduled reminders — the core value — require the paid plan. A trial that includes all Pro features gives users the complete product experience before asking for payment. A freemium model would let users use the ledger (less valuable) freely, while never experiencing reminders (the core value) before deciding to upgrade.
An alternative freemium model — free ledger, paid reminders — was rejected because it created a product where the less valuable feature was free and the core value was untested at the upgrade decision point.
The Result
7 days
Full Pro trial
No CC
Required to start
Higher
Projected conversion
The 7-day trial lowers the initial commitment barrier (the primary concern of users unfamiliar with SaaS) while giving UdharPay 7 days to demonstrate core value before the subscription question arises.
