From Idea to 50% Complete — The Full Timeline of Building UdharPay and What the Next 50% Looks Like

UdharPay Timeline: From Idea to 50% Completion

Startups are messy. Timelines are fiction. Roadmaps are aspirations. And yet, having a timeline and a roadmap is infinitely better than having neither. They create accountability even when reality insists on deviation. Here is the complete honest timeline of UdharPay from the first idea to the current 50% completion mark — and what the next 50% requires.

Day Zero — The Idea

The idea for UdharPay crystallized during a visit to my uncle's kirana shop in Aurangabad. ₹47,000 in outstanding credit. No system to collect it. The social friction of asking too high to overcome.

I drove home with the problem in my head. I did not open a laptop. I walked around my apartment for two hours thinking about the market, the solution, the competition, and whether I was the right person to build it. By the time I slept, I had decided to validate it before building anything.

Week One — Validation

I built the Google Form in two hours. Twelve questions covering business type, outstanding credit amounts, current tools, solution desirability, and willingness to pay.

I shared it everywhere: Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp groups, Facebook groups for kirana owners, Reddit. I visited five shops personally. By day seven: 73 responses. 54% said definitely would pay. 61% rated the solution 5 out of 5 on usefulness. Validation complete. Building begins.

Weeks Two and Three — Architecture Decisions

I spent two weeks in notebooks and whiteboards before writing code: tech stack, database schema, authentication flow, pricing model, feature prioritization. Key decisions made:

  • React plus Vite for frontend
  • Firebase for backend and auth
  • WhatsApp Cloud API for messaging
  • Stripe for billing
  • Global launch in India, USA, and Germany simultaneously

Weeks Four Through Eight — Core Build

The first eight weeks of active development produced:

  • Marketing website with five pages
  • Complete design system with green, cream, and gold color palette
  • Firebase authentication with Google login
  • Two-step business onboarding flow
  • Customer management with Firestore real-time sync
  • Ledger entry system with due date tracking
  • Reminder sending interface (UI complete, WhatsApp integration pending)
  • Dashboard with outstanding amount summary

Weeks Nine and Ten — Content and Launch Preparation

Build-in-public content strategy activated: Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, and Threads posting began. Google Form waitlist live. First 73 signups received. This is where we are now.

The Next 50% — What Needs to Be Built

The remaining half of UdharPay breaks into four major components:

  • Firestore security rules and Settings page: Quick, one day each, but critical before sharing with real users.
  • WhatsApp Cloud API integration: Core feature. Cloud Functions that send templated messages, handle delivery status webhooks, enforce plan limits, and schedule automated reminders on due dates. Estimated: 5–7 days plus 2–3 days waiting for Meta template approval.
  • Stripe billing integration: Subscription management, webhook handling for activation and cancellation, plan enforcement in the application. Estimated: 3–4 days.
  • Admin panel: Dashboard for monitoring all registered businesses, plan statuses, revenue, and reminder volumes. Estimated: 2–3 days.

Total estimated remaining development: 3–4 weeks.

Target date for first paying customer: six weeks from today. That target will likely slip. Targets always slip. But having a specific target — six weeks, first paying customer — is better than a vague aspiration of launching "soon."

The next update will be the blog post I write after receiving that first ₹749. I cannot wait to write it.
